For over 30 years, Montreat College’s School of Adult and Graduate Studies has empowered students to acquire essential skills, complete their degrees, and advance their careers. Montreat offers undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs both in the classroom and online.
How soon can I start?
With six start dates a year for most programs you have the flexibility to start when makes the most sense for you. Chances are we have classes starting in the near future, providing you the opportunity to move forward with your academic goals. What are the admissions requirements?
Applicants must submit the following for admissions consideration:
- Montreat College Application for Admission
- Official, final transcripts of all college courses taken (All final transcripts must include graduation information)
- Minimum 2.75 GPA over last 60 credit hours of undergraduate work
- An application essay may be available for interested applicants whose GPA is below 2.75.
*If the applicant has a GPA below 2.75 in their last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study, a “Low GPA” essay is required. The essay should cover challenges that contributed to the low GPA, as well as specifically what the applicant will do to maintain a 2.75 overall GPA in the MSK program.

This program requires the completion of 30 credit hours or 10 classes. If students take a full-time load each term—one class at a time continuously throughout the program—they should complete the program within 20 months.

KINE 5010 Ethics and Leadership in Kinesiology
This course will focus on value systems and their role in ethical leadership. Ethical issues in kinesiology, sport, exercise, and physical education are examined, with the application of leadership theory and fundamental principles in guiding ethical discussion, assessment, and evaluation. This course will include an examination of biblical principles of leadership, relevant laws and theories pertaining to leadership, ethical theories, and the development of leadership in the domains of kinesiology, exercise, and sport.
KINE 5020 Physiology and Anatomy
Physiology and Anatomy is a course designed to provide students with an understanding of the function, regulation, and integration of human body organs and musculoskeletal systems. Emphasis is placed on homeostatic maintenance in health as well as in some disease processes. Course content includes introductory cell physiology and all major organ systems.
KINE 5030 Exercise and Fitness Education
This course will focus on the pedagogical principles of fitness and applied psychomotor skills that fitness professionals must possess in order to successfully work with adults and special populations. Instructional methods will be studied in relation to cardio-respiratory endurance, strength, flexibility exercises, skill-related components of fitness, body composition, and wellness. Discussion regarding the need for embodied wellness as an act of responsible creation will be done. Special emphasis will be placed on health risk factors, fitness assessment, movement technique, and exercise programming.
KINE 5040 Legal Aspects of Kinesiology
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an examination of the legal and ethical environment in which professional and amateur sports presently operate. Included will be a broad discussion of ethics, aspects of contract law, labor law, and antitrust law, as they apply to the sports industry. Through knowledge dissemination, class participation (discussions and presentations), and professional inquiry, a variety of information regarding legal and ethical aspects of sport is explored.
KINE 5050 Advanced Exercise Physiology
This course prepares students to better understand clinical exercise physiology, sport physiology, and exercise testing and prescription. Students will understand the bioenergetics, energetics of human movement, lactate metabolism, cardiovascular and pulmonary exercise physiology, and both acute and chronic hormonal responses to exercise.
KINE 5060 Sports Nutrition
This course provides a foundation in the science of exercise nutrition and bioenergetics. These foundational principles will be used in constructing sound nutritional recommendations as they apply to human physical activity and sports medicine. Current research concerning pharmacologic and nutritional ergogenic aids, disordered eating, fluid balance and thermoregulation, and body composition will be discussed.
KINE 5070 Advanced Study of Sport and Exercise Psychology
This course will focus on psychological theory and its application to sport and exercise performance. An in-depth analysis of sport psychology theory and exercise behavior will be applied to areas such as motivation, goal setting, burnout, anxiety, attention/concentration, and behavior change. Current issues, research trends, and interventions will play a critical role in the discovery and application of sport and exercise psychological theory.
KINE 5080 Research Methods in Kinesiology
This course provides an introduction to research methods designed to acquaint the student with reading and analyzing literature. The material will include basic statistics and quantitative and qualitative research methods.
KINE 5090 Fitness Testing and Exercise Prescription for Special Populations
This integrated lecture and virtual lab course focus on the administration and interpretation of exercise tests for special populations. Lectures and interactive labs will help prepare students to identify normal and abnormal physiological responses of the human body before, during, and after the administration of various exercise testing and training protocols. The application of current research will guide program design and exercise prescription for adults and special populations. Prerequisite: Ethics and Leadership in Kinesiology.
KINE 6000 Applied Knowledge in Kinesiology (Capstone)
This course is a culminating experience that will allow the student to demonstrate the knowledge they have gained throughout the Master of Science in Kinesiology program. The culminating exercise will be in the format of a comprehensive examination, research project, or thesis. Students completing a project or thesis will prepare a presentation that focuses on that experience.
